Review: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.

Main Character: Hannah Baker, Clay Jensen
Love Interest: ??
Series: None
Author: Website|Facebook|Twitter|Goodreads

Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker–his classmate and crush–who committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list. Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, debut author Jay Asher weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect teen readers.

The other day, my niece Chaylene and I were discussing this movie. Selena Gomez was mentioned as playing Hannah in the movie making of this book and I'm thrilled because I adore Selena Gomez. I just watched Monte Carlo and thought it was an adorable movie just like Selena herself so I was a happy camper when they slotted her as Hannah and because I was excited, I picked this book up for a quick re-read.

This book sure does bring out the deep thoughts when you read it. The first time that I read this book, I found myself thinking back to the way that I treated my fellow peers when I was in high school. Did I make fun of anyone? Was I a terrible person? Could I have helped someone in need? I couldn't help myself from thinking those same thoughts when I was reading this book again.

This time around, I was more wrapped up reading about Clay and his thoughts and feeling his pain at receiving all of these tapes and seeing that line, my heart breaking for him with every page I turned.

"There are 13 reasons why your friend died. You are one of them."
Can you imagine hearing that about one of your friends? My heart went out to both Hannah and to Clay while reading this book and this time around, I got angry at Hannah. I got angry at her for putting Clay through all of the turmoil that she he went through, scared out of his mind because he was horrified to think that he would have anything to do with her suicide when he harbored an enormous crush on her. Getting something like this box is the last thing you'd want to get from the girl who you liked, who killed herself.

Throughout this book, I felt the same rush that I felt the first time I read it. My heart pounded with each page, my pulse raced and the emotions were high. I shed tears for Hannah (even when I was mad at her for Clay) and one of the main things that I think pulled at me with this story was that it's not a story that glamorizes suicide. This story is about a girl who committed suicide but the book focused solely on the bullying and the things that led a young girl to this horrible ending.

This book makes you aware of the kind of person you are. It makes you want to make changes so that you're never in a position where you'd get something like this in the mail. The story pulls at you emotionally and it makes you sit up and take notice of those around you. This book is wonderfully written and Jay Asher has made me a full blown fangirl with this one.

If you haven't read this book then I strongly urge that you change that because this is the kind of book that should be read by everyone, whether you're young or older. Everyone should read it. It's that good.

..and that's your scoop!

I think I'm one of the few who didn't like this book, though I enjoyed reading your review. It was very thoughtful.

My main problem was that I never felt much sympathy for the characters :P but I guess that's more of a personal issue. :)
