Week in Review
Week in Review is something that Thrifty Reader's Ames started on her blog that I wanted to take part in.
Check out all of my week in reviews to see what I've read, reviewed and received in the mail each week.
The Book Scoop receives and accepts books from authors, publishers, publicists and other third party distributors. That I get books for review does not sway my opinion on the books. In each review, I always give my honest opinion.
I don't have an Amazon Associates account, a B&N associates account or whatever other associates accounts are out there. I don't earn any kind of money by running this blog. This blog is a labor of love and that's it.
When you're the daughter of the bestselling Queen of Romance, life should be pretty good. But 16-year-old Alice Amorous has been living a lie ever since her mother was secretly hospitalized for mental illness. After putting on a brave front for months, time is running out. The next book is overdue, and the Queen can't write it. Alice needs a story for her mother—and she needs one fast.
That's when she meets Errol, a strange boy who claims to be Cupid, who insists that Alice write about the greatest love story in history: his tragic relationship with Psyche. As Alice begins to hear Errol's voice in her head and see things she can't explain, she must face the truth—that she's either inherited her mother's madness, or Errol is for real.
This book looks like all kinds of good. A romance novel writing mother? Yeah, I'm all about it. I can't wait to get my hands on this book so that I can get it read. I've read one music themed book and thought it was super good so I'm all about reading another one. This book comes out on January 4, 2011 so there isn't much of a waiting time so WOOT! Mark your calendars dear readers, you won't want to miss this one cause I don't!
A critically acclaimed novel that will change the way you look at life, love, and family.
In the blink of an eye everything changes. Seventeenyear-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall what happened afterwards, watching her own damaged body being taken from the wreck. Little by little she struggles to put together the pieces- to figure out what she has lost, what she has left, and the very difficult choice she must make. Heartwrenchingly beautiful, Mia's story will stay with you for a long, long time.
This was a short but oh so heartwrenching story about a young girl who loses everything she loves most in this world in the blink of an eye and while she's in ICU realizes that she still has so much to live for.
This is the first book that I've read by Gayle Forman and I'm so glad that I read Mollie's review of this book because it made me curious and it made me want to read it for myself so I bought it and when I finally started the book, I couldn't put it down.
I thought it was such a good book. From beginning to end, it was good. From the moment of impact through the middle and then the way it ended, it all had me wrapped right up in this entire story. It was equal parts sad, enlightening and just flat out good. Getting to know Mia the way that we got to know her made for some good reading. My heart went out to her and while it was a sad story, I didn't start crying until Kim made her way over to Mia's bedside. The way that she let Mia know that she knew what she lost but that she still had things to live for, oh man I bawled my eyes out because it was so true.
There was so much more to live for outside of her grandparents, her parents friends, Adam and Kim. There was her music and then everything that Adam talked about in his impassioned bedside speech. I thought that was heartbreaking the way that Adam loved her. The way that he loved her and wanted the best for her, even if she didn't think it was him anymore.
This was a good book, one that will pull at your heartstrings. It was sad, heartbreaking and yet so good at the same time. I totally recommend this book.
Main Character: Kaylee Cavanaugh Love Interest: Nash Hudson Series: Soul Screamers Series, Book 4 Author: Website|Facebook|Twitter|Good Reads
YOU WANT MY SOUL AND MY BOYFRIEND?
Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can’t just pretend nothing happened. But “complicated” doesn’t even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.
See, Sabine isn’t just an ordinary girl. She’s a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people’s fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.
And Sabine isn’t above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.
I DON'T THINK SO.
There is going to be a lot of spoilers in this review so I'm going to hide it in plain sight, so if you want to read the review, highlight it and you'll be able to read it. This tiny paragraph serves as your warning that in this review, there be spoilers. Lots of them.
I had to take a few days to get my thoughts (and emotions) under control before I could even think about starting this review. So much went down in this book and it left me feeling anxious, worried and annoyed. There was a lot of couple drama in this book with the introduction of Sabine and while I didn't hate her, I certainly was annoyed with Kaylee because of her.
Kaylee's whole self righteousness got on my nerves a bit in this book and there were times aplenty that I had to remind myself that Kaylee was a teenager because man did I want to smack her a time or two (or three or four) while reading this one but as annoyed with her as I was, never once did I want her and Nash not to work their problems out and with Sabine now in the picture and very much going after Nash, I was scared out of my pants that they would somehow end up together.
That can't be the case. Nash has to end up with Kaylee, no matter how much drama is going down right now, in the end...Nash must end up with Kaylee. I was terribly upset after the scene in which Tod tells Kaylee what he did about Nash and Sabine. I don't hate Sabine, I never did (even when she was being a total b word) but for me, this series revolves around Nash and Kaylee. The both of them together and I don't agree with Tod that Kaylee doesn't need Nash, she's strong and everything but she leans on Nash a lot and she needs him just as much as he needs her.
This book revolves mostly around jealousy and for me, I wasn't a fan of it. I didn't like all of the jealousy going around and because of that, I spent a great deal of this book pissed off. I was pissed off at Kaylee and her fixation on Sabine being the killer running amock around their school and I was pissed off that Kaylee was being so selfish where Nash was concerned. While I understood why she felt the way that she did but I hated the way that she used Nash. She wouldn't forgive him (which is okay) but she turned to him when she needed him and he came running because he loved her.
What I want to know is all of that soul mate crap that Tod was going off about with Nash and Sabine...that's not true is it? I will be a great deal pissed off if Nash ends up with Sabine because he can't. He belongs with Kaylee and I hate being unsure of their love for each other.
I will say that it was great to see the whole gang again. From Tod to Harmony and Kaylee's Dad, I loved seeing them a part of the book and I'm going to keep up the faith that Nash and Kaylee will work things out. This book is another good addition to a series that I'm already obsessed with so fans of the series should read this one because it keeps the Soul Screamers series going and while there wasn't a lot of the paranormal aspect of the series in this one, it was still good.
I'm anxious to get the novella Reaper, which tells us the story of how Tod died and after putting this book down, I'm more than a little anxious for If I Die, which is the next story in this series. I hope we don't have to wait until 2012 for that one. Reading Order:
From my family to your families, I hope that you have a very Merry Christmas! I hope your tree is filled to the brim with Christmas gifts and your house if full of Christmas cheer! I hope Santa saved you some cookies and Ruldolph didn't mess up your rooftops!
Make it a good one and don't drink too much eggnog!
In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees . . . .
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.
Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.
As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?
Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

..so that's your scoop!
What did you guys get this week? Any gems? Share with me, will ya?
There's a new blog on the block with a familiar face. Sarah, the blog administrator for Book Lurve is an oldie but goodie blogger who took a break from blogging but is back. She's also reading some YA fiction which I think is freaking awesome (she's actually reading Anna and the French Kiss right now and I'm super jealous!) and to top things off, she's giving away the Mortal Instruments Series on her blog so jump on that!
For all of my younger readers (if there are any, really), I feel I must warn you that though Sarah will be reading/reviewing YA on her blog, she also reads a lot of romance so there will be a fair amount of adult reading as well, some erotica and what not so this is your warning!
WELCOME BACK SARAH!
..and that's your scoop!
ETA: Thanks to Mollie from Booksfare Delight for the heads up on this! Mollie you rock and now you guys can see my Dexter background on my Firefox window? LOL.
On the last day of her junior year, Hannah's boyfriend Ryan dumped her. Facing a summer of loneliness, Hannah turns to her best friend Ava for comfort. Ava does what BFFs do: she stays by Hannah's side...until it's time for Ava to head up to Maine for the summer. Also left behind is Ava's boyfriend, Noah, who's such a great guy he gets Hannah a job at the diner he waits tables at. Slowly, Hannah comes out of her funk thanks to Noah's good conversation and their fun times at the diner. But things get complicated when their friendship turns into attraction--and one night, into a passionate kiss. The novel opens on the first day of senior year; the day Hannah is going to see Ava, Ryan, and Noah all in one place. Over the course of the day secrets and betrayals are revealed, and alliances are broken and reformed. In the end, everyone is paired up once again, but not the way you might think...
I've got one Lauren Barnholdt book read under my belt and I'm eager for more. This book looks like a promising story and I'm mighty curious to see how it all pans out. The blurb does a great job of sucking me in and making me want more so yes, I want this book!
It comes out on July 12, 2011 so I have a super duper long wait ahead of me but still, I want! Mark your reading calendars everyone, this one looks like its not a book to be missed!
Main Character: Christy Hurley Love Interest: Finnuala Whippett aka Amy Series: None (that I can gather) Author: Website|Facebook|Twitter|Goodreads
Ireland, 1959: Young Christy Hurley is a Pavee gypsy, traveling with his father and extended family from town to town, carrying all their worldly possessions in their wagons. Christy carries with him a burden of guilt as well, haunted by the story of his mother's death in childbirth. The peripatetic life is the only one Christy has ever known, but when his grandfather dies, everything changes. His father decides to settle down temporarily in a town where Christy and his cousin can attend mass and receive proper schooling. But they are still treated as outsiders.
As Christy's exposure to a different life causes him to question who he is and where he belongs, the answer may lie with an old newspaper photograph and a long-buried family secret that could change his life forever...
I got this book for review and though it's not really a YA book, the main character was a young man named Christopher Hurley and he was a Pavee. A Pavee is like a gypsy where a group (usually family) traveled from one place to another, never really settling in one spot for too long before moving on to a new place. After Christy's grandfather dies, he comes into a small newspaper picture of a young woman who is wearing an identical necklace to Christy's own necklace that he wears all the time and when he finds out that the young woman holding the baby in her arms is his mother, Christy starts digging into his own personal history with the help of the lady at the bookstore (who's name I totally forgot).
This book takes place in 1959 and is told through the eyes of a young boy who is struggling to find out who he is and where he came from. It was a lot deeper than I thought it was going to be but no less entertaining. The relationship that Christy has with his cousin Martin kept me laughing from time to time and seeing Christy grieve for his grandfather and then trying to find out more about his mother made for some great reading.
This book was interesting and it was good. Christy was a bright young boy who was easy to fall in love with. The book is also rich with Celtic history and I enjoyed reading it. Watching as the mystery surrounding Christy's mother came to light kept me at the edge of my seat because I was dying to know what was what with her.
What was interesting about this whole book was the mystery that Christy is trying to uncover. The mystery surrounding his mother. Over the course of this book, I grew to love Christy and I was just as anxious to find out what the whole deal with his Mom was really about. Every time he asked his Dad for answers and walked away with none, my frustration built but with the help of the bookstore lady, Christy starts to uncover some truths about who he really is and where he belongs.
I really enjoyed this book. From the way that it's told to the way that everything comes together, I enjoyed it all. Christy was such an amazing character and it was so easy to fall in with his story because he was such a likable character. The way that his story unfolds was captivating and Christy himself was such a charming character. I loved that the story is told exactly the way that Christy talks and I loved seeing his world come to life through his POV.
Would I recommend this book? Of course though I should warn everyone that this book isn't necessarily a Young Adult book. It's an adult book told through an almost 12 year old boy but it's a good book, it's got strong characters and a narrator that you'll come to love. So yes, I definitely recommend this book.
I loved, loved, loved, loved it! I really liked it so read this book! I liked it well enough. *sigh* I didn't really care for it though there were a thing or two that I did like. I effing hate this book!
My grades are based mostly on my enjoyment of the book. That is all.
